When Eric and I were dating, I told him I one day wanted a big pumpkin patch. One that our friends and neighbors could walk through and pick their own. We had fun talking and dreaming about it, making plans for the future. Eric always wanted a farm and to be a gardener, so he was excited and made it his goal to grow healthy, beautiful pumpkins! We bought a home in 2019 with a backyard perfect for a garden and play area for our future kids. Eric planned out our landscaping with fruit trees, a side driveway, a play area, chicken coop, grow boxes and area for our pumpkin patch. We started growing pumpkins and the first year they did really well. The following year, Eric tilled the garden and that year, the pumpkins didn’t do so great. The following year, Eric tilled the garden before planting and the pumpkins did even worse. We had friends tell us how easy it was to grow pumpkins and we started wondering what we were doing wrong. We tested our soil to see what nutrients we were deficient in and since then have learned so much about soil health. We learned about no-till gardens and other things, such as the importance of compost. We recognized what type of weeds were flourishing in our garden and why they were growing there. We loved this process and wanted to share this with other backyard farmers to help your garden grow!
